The Sonoma Developmental Center 1891-2016

I have driven by this property for years and have always been fascinated with its history. Located in Glen Ellen the property is stunning although the buildings have been in decline since it closed in 2016🥲.

But the history should be shared-what first started as an orphanage later turned into a home where parents sent their kids that could no longer be cared for.

I toured with my friend who had been a nurse here for 30 years-bless her heart for caring for so many❤️

Wine Country Living…Carmel style

Just under three hours from Sonoma is the beautiful town of Carmel by the Sea. Gorgeous beaches, fabulous restaurants and shops, golf, wineries, hiking trails.

This was a favorite destination for my mother and me when she was alive. And now I am happy to see the tradition continue with my adult son.

Kudos to La Playa hotel for making our stay as fabulous as possible when the whole town of Carmel was without power.

I had the sweetest Holiday Spirit night last night with these two dear friends.

First we met for some Holiday cheer and great conversation-we had some catching up to do🥂

Then we strolled thru this adorable Holiday Lights park hosted by @marincountygov If you have small kids/grandkids this is a must visit. They also offer a crafts room for the little ones.💕

And ended the evening watching Love Actually at the Civic Center Theater. Can you believe I have never watched this movie?! What a sweet must see Holiday film. Watch it tonight!

We laughed we cheered and we left with so much Holiday feel good vibes🎄

✈Holiday travel is exciting… until your body thinks it’s 3:00 a.m. while everyone else is ordering dinner. Jet lag happens to the best of us, but a few simple tricks can make it far less dramatic.

💧Hydrate like it’s your job
Planes are basically flying deserts. Drink water often and go easy on alcohol until you’ve adjusted.

☀️Chase the sunlight
Sunlight helps reset your internal clock. Get outside as soon as you arrive—even a short walk can work wonders.

🛌Nap smart (or don’t)
If you must nap, keep it short—20–30 minutes max. Otherwise, power through until a reasonable local bedtime.

🤸‍♀️Move a little
Stretch on the plane, walk the terminal, or take a gentle stroll after arrival. Movement tells your body it’s time to wake up and explore.

Bottom line:
Jet lag doesn’t have to steal your holiday joy. With a little planning, lots of water, and a sense of humor, you’ll be sipping coffee—or something stronger—on local time in no time.

This Thanksgiving is looking a little different—and that’s okay. 💛

Unexpected surprise-Shimizu a city I was not familiar with but loved! Mt. Fuji, beaches, the architecture and of course temples.

Favorite thing about Japan-the people. They are so kind. And even if they speak very little English they will stop to try to help you.

First excursion was in Hakodate-and what an immersion into local culture it was! First we stopped by the Morning Market where locals shop for fresh fish-fabulous! Then we walked the city to find an Orthodox Church.

Our mother was Russian Orthodox so of course we had to take a photo (traveling with my sister).

**A note to first time cruisers-weather can change all of your plans-embrace change, go with the flow, relax and appreciate that you are blessed to have the opportunity to travel💕

What that means is more food, more wine but also a perfect time to relax, people watch and catch up on fun beach reads.

The funny thing about this cruise traveler is that I like cruising for the convenience of visiting multiple cities and only unpacking once.

Ironically I do not enjoy the free shows (which BTW most cruisers love), the games, formal nights the special events etc. so I am not your average cruiser.

My point is there are many reasons to choose cruising-talk to your travel agent and find out if it isright for you✨✨

Day 1:
☀️Arrive a day early to make sure I make it to the ship on time.
⛴️ First impression, the ship is very dated but clean.
😱Throw away your itinerary plans as a typhoon heads our way and changes our course completely-heading north instead of south to avoid high seas. Favorite cities?!-kabashed!
🍽️ The food is surprisingly good for being such a large ship and so many mouths to feed.

I am a very flexible traveller, the schedule change was a minor disappointment. But first time travelers be ware, weather and other factors can alter your trip. Be prepared, be flexible and find alternative ways to make the trip memorable.

🌊 Locals swim in the city harbor—it’s that clean.
🌭 Hot dog stands are a national treasure (suits + street dogs = totally normal).
🎄 At Christmas, elves patrol the streets spreading cheer.

How I Got Started in Travel

It all started on a solo flight home after visiting my son in Europe. Somewhere over the Atlantic, I realized two things: I love to travel… and I’d rather share those adventures with someone else. Since waiting around for a travel buddy (or Prince Charming) wasn’t my style, I decided to create my own company—and bring other amazing women along for the ride!

My first business was called 50 is Just a Number (because it is!), but now that I’m 60, it’s officially Kilian Travel and Lifestyle. My focus? Planning unforgettable, personalized trips—whether it’s a luxe getaway, a peaceful cruise, or an epic sporting event.
